Expedition Outfitters Fly Fishing Guide School is held on the Guadalupe River near New Braunfels Texas. We have been training successful Fly Fishing Guides and Outfitters for over 15 years. We are the only Fly Fishing Guide School in Texas. Expedition Outfitters Fly Fishing Guide School/Training features a flexible 5-day curriculum designed to transition proficient fly fishers into professional fly-fishing guides. The course is taught in modules, and the instructor to student ratio is small (groups can also be arranged by special request). For successful graduates, we offer placement assistance with established outfitters in Texas, Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming. The program prioritizes boat operation, client development and management, teaching mechanics, business development, website design, social media marketing, pro-staff applications and more. We include: Watercraft Operation & Maintenance, Raft and Drift Boat Management: Mastering rowing progressions, holding water for clients, boat positioning relative to fish habitats, and safe boat ramp etiquette. Power Boat Handling: Operating, maneuvering, and maintaining motorized boats on moving water systems. And as an option, learning to pole a saltwater skiff. Trailering: Mastering proper vehicle trailering techniques, strapping boats down safely, and executing multi-point pre-trip safety checklists, wheel bearing lubrication and maintenance. Instructional & Fishing Strategy Teaching: Fly-Casting: Learning how to effectively diagnose and coach casting errors for paying clients. Instruction includes teaching the roll cast, reach cast, false cast, and the double haul. Rigging & Fly Selection: Fast, efficient knot tying under pressure and matching the hatch utilizing localized entomology. On-the-Water Tactics: Technical strategies for reading water columns, determining where fish hold, fighting fish, and deploying netting strategies. Regulatory: Obtaining Guide and Outfitters Licenses, Government Permits, Safety Certifications, Reporting Requirements for Local, State and Federal Authorities. Client Management & Hospitality Managing Expectations: Learning how to navigate diverse client personalities, varying skill levels, and differing trip goals (e.g., teaching beginners vs. hunting for trophy fish). Streamside Hospitality: Preparation, setup, and premium presentation of outdoor streamside client lunches. Resource Stewardship & Safety/ Public Water Etiquette: Navigating public waters responsibly, minimizing ecological impact, and managing guide/landowner private property lines. Catch & Release Ethics: Best practices for safely playing, photographing, and releasing fish to ensure high survival rates.Wilderness Safety: recognizing poisonous snakes, plants, and physical and terrain hazards.
